To help bolster science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) abilities, Sphero has developed an all-terrain, high-torque, programmable robot named RVR (pronounced “rover”).
Right out of the box, the sensor-packed RVR is ready to start driving. The platform offers more than that, though, as it’s highly customizable, designed to be hacked from users of all skill levels.
“We’ve added some incredible features that open up a world of possibilities for hackers, educators, students, technical hobbyists, and anyone else ready to take it to the next level. With our universal expansion port and onboard power, you can attach and run third-party hardware like a Raspberry Pi, BBC micro:bit, or Arduino,” according to the company’s Kickstarter campaign.

RVR utilizes a vector-based closed-looped control system for precision driving, an onboard sensor suite (color and light sensors, IR, magnetometer, accelerometer, and gyroscope), a hackable platform, and the Sphero Edu app. In the app, users will find the joystick to drive RVR, as well as ways to adjust the robot’s speed and customize the RVR’s 10 LEDs.
The app is also where the coding fun begins. Those at the beginner level might find it easier to start with the Draw and Drive feature. After gaining some knowledge, users can graduate to block programming, and then, finally, JavaScript text coding. If someone gets stuck during the process, they can head over to the app’s online support community.

“RVR includes a rechargeable, removable, high-capacity battery with dual functionality: it powers the motors with a 7.4 V output while providing the universal expansion port with a 5 V 2.1 A USB-A output to help power cameras, robotic arms, air horns, or anything else that needs juice,” according to Sphero. The battery lasts up to 2 hours per charge.
After reviewing user feedback regarding robot feature requests, Sphero constructed a design that the users can program, hack, and customize themselves, as well as facilitate hands-on STEAM engagement.
Already surpassing its fundraising goals, pledges start at $199, with shipments slated for October 2019, if all goes according to plan.
