ABBYY, announced the availability of ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries 2.0 for iOS, a comprehensive dictionary and translation application for Apple mobile devices. The solution brings to market a new photo translation function that allows users to translate words by photographing them with the iPhone camera and represents the easiest way to look-up and translate words while on the go. The new photo translation capability is based on ABBYY Mobile OCR Engine, an internationally acclaimed text recognition technology that provides the industry’s broadest language support and outstanding accuracy in mobile applications.
“Lingvo Dictionaries installed on Apple mobile devices are helping to change the way that people interact with the world around them, making it easier and more enjoyable,” commented Katya Solntseva, ABBYY’s mobile products department director. “Now users can photograph a piece of text from a newspaper, book, document or sign and view translations by “tapping” unknown words on the screen. This function becomes especially helpful when travelling or when the user is unsure of the language or spelling.”
ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries 2.0 provides a single tool for accessing a vocabulary of many languages. It allows users to easily purchase, download and use high-quality mobile dictionaries while on the go. The new version offers significantly expanded language support and more than 250 translation, explanatory, idiomatic and specialised dictionaries available for download. A total of 96 language combinations are represented, with English, German and Russian as the core translation languages. Additionally, once a keyword is entered, the user is presented with useful information such as translation alternatives, the phonetic spelling, audio pronunciations recorded by native speakers, word-use examples and inflected forms.
The basic dictionary set, available for download within the application for no extra charge, includes 58 dictionaries spanning 27 languages. Additional premium content dictionaries can be added anytime, allowing users to expand their translation capabilities.
On the iPhone, the photo translation feature supports instant translation of words in 27 European languages including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Greek, among others. Basic translations of every word in the photographed text are previewed in short pop-up entries on the iPhone screen, which allows for quick comprehension of the text. If necessary, short entries can be transformed into full entry versions to provide more information and translation alternatives. The application can also translate words directly from the clipboard, allowing users reading an e-book or surfing the Internet to copy up to five consecutive words from the text and automatically offering them for translation. The application also supports hypertext and allows users to get instant translation of any word found in the dictionary with just a single tap.
ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries 2.0 for iOS now supports more interface languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian.
