Adva products make carrier Ethernet easier

April 29, 2008 By Brian Santo

Adva Optical Networking has expanded its FSP Network Manager (FSP NM) with additional software designed to support carrier Ethernet networks.

The new features enable service providers to remotely monitor and manage the performance of thousands of network elements, all from a central location.

It introduces powerful technology that enables the automation of network operations and provides management for IEEE standard Provider Bridge (PB – 802.1ad) services, with support for Connectivity Fault Management (CFM – 802.1ag). The ADVA FSP NM is shipping now.

The platform offers traditional carrier-class management functionality, combined with Service Level Agreement (SLA) monitoring and test capabilities. These features, along with the Adva Etherjack technology, enable the reporting of SLAs based on the ITU Y.1731 standard for carrier Ethernet services, which telecommunications carriers use to verify that their customers receive only the most reliable network services.

The ADVA FSP NM enables collection and synthesization of statistics from the several thousand Ethernet termination points, especially those found in wireless backhaul applications. Providing for remote management of in-service software upgrades and remote database backup of a large number of devices, service providers save resources since large numbers of network elements can be upgraded as a group rather than one by one.

At the same time, Adva launched its FSP 150CM, the latest member of its FSP 150 family of intelligent Ethernet transport products. The company claims that the FSP 150CM is the first carrier-class modular Ethernet Network-to-Network Interface (NNI) demarcation device.

The product provides a simplified solution for bulk termination of Ethernet services or inter-carrier handoffs required for wholesale service applications. The Ethernet NNI is a critical element in the evolution of Ethernet services and is required at boundaries between different maintenance regions or different carriers. It performs an analogous function to ADVA Optical Networking’s industry-leading Etherjack demarcation devices that are now vital for providing the Ethernet service handoff at customer premises.
