Thanks to gear from Alcatel-Lucent, Cablevision Argentina is laying claim to being the first cable operator in South America to deliver 100 Gbps speeds over an optical network.
Cablevision serves more than 3 million video customers and more than 1 million data customers in Argentina, but an increase in traffic subscribers had nearly tapped out its existing fiber capacity.
Cablevision Argentina said it picked Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G optical coherent networking platform to increase performance and service speeds to meet the growing demand for video, multimedia and Internet applications from its customer base.
“With Alcatel-Lucent’s solution, we are taking a major step toward providing a highly flexible, future-proof network, scaling up to 100G to support current and future bandwidth demands with increased efficiencies and reduced time to market for new services,” said Gabriel Carro, head of engineering for Cablevision Argentina.
Alcatel-Lucent is supplying its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) 100G coherent technology to improve Cablevision’s capacity scalability. Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G offering is part of its Converged Backbone Transformation platform.
