An alleged gunman motored away on a hoverboard after an unprovoked, non-fatal attack on a driver in a parking lot in Dallas, Fox News reported on Thursday.
The Dallas police are still investigating the incident, which allegedly occurred at around 4 a.m. Thursday morning. The victim, who had a gunshot wound in one arm, told the police that a man riding by on a hoverboard had asked him several times whether he needed a ride, then shot him and then scooted away on the two-wheeled vehicle. The suspect appears to have put the wheels to use in evading the police, as he could not be located when the officers searched the area after the incident.
The victim was sent to a local hospital and was expected to recover, according to the early-morning report.
Hoverboards seem much more likely to ignite while charging than be used as getaway vehicles so far. It’s for that reason that they’re banned in some public places and came under scrutiny from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission last week. The lithium-ion batteries, especially cheaply made ones, are liable to catch on fire while charging. So-called hoverboards proved a popular item for the holidays in 2015, and 52 fires have been reportedly caused by charging hoverboards.
In early February, a Florida teenager holding a gun while riding a hoverboard accidentally fatally shot his cousin.
