CableLabs said that embedded multimedia terminal adapters (E-MTAs) from Arris and Motorola are the first to achieve PacketCable 3.0 certification.
The two devices integrate the ability to deliver cable digital voice with DOCSIS 3.0, specifically the ability to bond downstream channels to create an aggregate downstream data rate of 160 Mbps or higher and upstream data rates of 120 Mbps or higher.
“This is a significant step forward that demonstrates very rapid progress by our suppliers in integrating these two broadband technologies,” said Ed Miller, SVP of broadband network services. “The availability of integrated components could lead to less capital expense for consumers and our members as they purchase and deploy these modems for voice and data services. Congratulations to Arris and Motorola on their achievement.”
As an example of the ever-increasing pace of technology integration in the cable industry, certification of E-MTAs with DOCSIS 1.1 lagged data modem certification by more than a year; this shrank to half a year with DOCSIS 2.0 and to only a few weeks in the case of DOCSIS 3.0. “This trend highlights advances in cable technology and points to even more rapid innovation for cable going forward,” said CableLabs CTO Ralph Brown.
