Arris said that it is adding Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) functionality to its VIPr transcoder product line in April, expanding its utility in international markets where the DVB standard is prevalent.

“Integrating DVB video support into the VIPr family is a critical milestone toward meeting video requirements in many markets around the world,” said Bill Hogan, vice president of advanced video products product line management. “Combining these new solutions into a proven platform further expands our ability to bring international customers an integrated, reliable and scalable transcoding solution set, which can result in significant gains in bandwidth efficiency and system reliability.”

Arris VIPr dual-pass encoding products support HD and SD transcoding or recoding in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 formats. That includes SD and HD multiplexing, high-density MPEG-2 intelligent recoding, MPEG-4 to MPEG-2 transcoding, constant bit rate (CBR) for switched video applications and variable bit rate (VBR) statistical multiplexing.

DVB is used in Europe, Russia, in most of the Middle East and Africa, and in India and Australia.
