Using equipment from Arris, UPC Austria has achieved a sustained downstream broadband speed of 1.3 Gbps.

The test was made using Arris’ C4 CMTS with downstream channel bonding and Touchstone data modems, over a live network that terminates in conventional coaxial cable.

Though the test used commercially available equipment, Arris said providing a broadband service tier at such a rate is not yet practical. It did not elaborate. UPC’s current fastest commercial tier is 100 Mbps.

At The Cable Show earlier this summer, Arris demonstrated the feasibility of achieving rates in excess of 4 Gbps using DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding. In a separate demonstration, Comcast and Cisco achieved broadband transmission rates of 1 Gbps.
