Aspen offers to double GBIC bandwidth

August 7, 2008 By Brian Santo

Aspen Optics is launching a Bi-Directional Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) for fiber broadband networks.

The company said that a carrier can turn a 1 Gbit circuit into a 2 Gbit circuit by using four of its carrier-grade Geebic WS-G5485U/D-AO GBICs.

The company said this implementation can enable bi-directional transmission on older switch models without SFP ports from major manufacturers. The advantage is to increase capacity on existing switches without adding more fiber.

Geebic Bi-Directional transceivers help users to utilize the same optical fiber for both transmission and reception functions. This allows the network to free up bandwidth for other applications, doubling the capacity compared with single direction connectivity, Aspen said.

Today, many operators are targeting aggressive market penetration in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), and they need speedy solutions to innovate and expand the network. This is possible with Aspen Optics’ products that allow easy upgrade of existing network equipment for optical transmission to create a significant increase in capacity of optical infrastructure.
