AT&T has notched another metro area in its fiber belt: Monterey-Salinas.
The carrier on Thursday noted the California region is the latest home of its 1 Gbps fiber internet service. The offering is now available across the Monterey-Salinas area, including in parts of Santa Cruz and surrounding communities. Access is expected to be pushed into Capitola and Salinas in the future, AT&T said.
AT&T’s gigabit Internet 1000 service is offered for $70 per month to AT&T bundle customers, or for $80 per month as a standalone service.
As usual, government officials hailed the launch as a boon for locals.
“High-speed internet has quickly become a preferred way to access information and communicate,” Monterey County’s District 1 Supervisor Luis A. Alejo commented. “Our residents want faster internet speeds to take our area into the digital age and communicate with the people who matter most. We are happy that AT&T will bring more fiber capacity to our Monterey County communities.”
The deployment makes Monterey-Salinas the 54th metro area to receive AT&T’s fiber internet offering, following deployments in cities like Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, Memphis, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Nashville, Miami, and New Orleans. AT&T said its gigabit service is now available in over 5 million locations.
More deployments are on the way, though. AT&T said it’s planning to add 2 million more locations this year as part of its goal to hit 12.5 million locations by the middle of 2019. According to a map from the carrier, deployments are underway in 21 additional cities, including Asheville, N.C., Corpus Christi, Texas, Macon and Savannah, Ga., Pensacola and Panama City, Fla., and Dayton, Ohio. Ultimately, the carrier said it’s hoping to extend its fiber reach into at least 75 metro areas.
