AT&T finished up its acquisition of Quickplay Media from Madison Dearborn Partners, but financial terms weren’t disclosed. The deal underlines AT&T’s strategy to allow subscribers to stream DirecTV to almost all mobile devices.
Quickplay is the platform provider for AT&T’s U-verse TV Everywhere. It’ll also support DirecTV Now, DirecTV Mobile and DirecTV Preview streaming offers that AT&T plans to introduce later this year.
A recent study from Limelight reports that the smartphone is the most popular device for watching online video for Millennials. Smartphones also are gaining ground among the broader population for streaming video, according to that report.
AT&T says it plans to retain Quickplay’s team of more than 350 employees and contractors.
