AT&T said it has attracted a half-dozen developers to AT&T Drive, the company’s program to support the adaptation of mobile apps for use in connected vehicles.
AT&T set up the program to give automakers a selection of services and capabilities to include in their connected vehicles.
From connectivity and billing solutions to data analytics, infotainment, and firmware over the air updates, AT&T Drive allows auto makers and developers to implement their own innovative and customized connected car solutions, the company said.
One of the adaptations specifically useful for use in vehicles is speech recognition, so drivers can command the app completely by voice – not just open and close it.
Ideally, speech-enabled apps help keep drivers focused on driving by relieving them from having to physically manipulate the playing device.
The new apps available to automakers for inclusion in their connected car options include:
· AccuWeather for AT&T Drive – Provides localized current conditions, as well as hourly and five day forecasts and warns of inclement conditions
· iHeartRadio – App includes large text and touch targets, intuitive menu functions, and an interface designed to reduce distracting light
· Newsbeat – Mobile news app that provides personalized audio streams of the day’s top articles from leading newspapers and websites
· Stitcher – On demand radio shows and podcasts. Features custom playlists and personalized recommendations
· Parker by Streetline – Displays real-time data to make finding and paying for parking easy
· Glympse – Allows connected car drivers to share their dynamic location in real-time for a predetermined amount of time.
“Each of these apps provides an enhanced in-car experience for users while also keeping driver safety top of mind,” said Chris Penrose, senior vice president, Emerging Devices. “AT&T Drive’s app selection was developed so that drivers could make more informed decisions while they are driving to help them point A to point B safely, but do so as efficiently and comfortably as possible.”
Additionally, a new sponsorship agreement with TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) will provide navigation support for the AT&T Drive Studio, AT&T’s testing garage and speech lab located in Atlanta. The sponsorship agreement with TCS includes support for navigation system development.
