Starting Aug. 1, AT&T will be delivering its GigaPower service to a new student housing complex near the University of Texas in Austin.
AT&T will provision its GigaPower service over a fiber-to-the-premise network to the housing complex, which is called “The Villas on 26th.”
“The Villas on 26th are breaking new ground by being the first student housing development at UT to offer ultra high-tech amenities like built-in home automation and in-wall touch screens in all apartments. Much of the Villas will even have private, furnished home theaters in each individual apartment, said Brad Zucker, developer of The Villas. “Offering AT&T’s latest innovation, U-verse with GigaPower, continues to set us apart from other communities in delivering a technology-first living experience.”
AT&T first launched GigaPower in Austin in December with symmetrical speeds of 300 Mbps. AT&T and Google Fiber have both said they plan on offering 1-Gig services in Austin this summer. AT&T didn’t say if The Villas would have the 1 Gbps speeds or the current 300 Mbps. It also didn’t say if it was providing the home automation features in the apartments.
In April, AT&T said it would expand its GigaPower service to many as 21 additional markets. GigaPower is slated for Dallas this summer and AT&T has said it’s in discussions with Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem.
Last week Time Warner Cable announced it would launch a 300 Mbps tier on Tuesday to more than 100,000 customers in Austin, as well as upgrade other tiers to faster download speeds at no additional cost. Time Warner Cable also announced that it had more than 2,000 Wi-Fi hotspots available to its business and residential broadband customers in Austin.
Grande Communications currently offers a fiber-to-the-home 1-Gigabit service in some areas of its footprint as well as a 110 Mbps service that it plans to upgrade to 300 Mbps.
