Audi Engine Development Chief Stefan Knirsch is leaving the company, according to a statement made today.

Knirsch, who has led the company’s powertrain development since 2013, made the decision to leave Audi under his own directive. Prior to joining Audi, he was an executive with Porsche. Knirsch’s departure comes at a difficult time, as Audi is now giving more attention to electric cars and self-driving vehicle technology. The company is also trying to fend off rival Mercedes-Benz, who has been closing the sales gap between the two German auto manufacturers.
