Blockbuster is adopting encryption software from Motorola Mobility to secure content on its new Blockbuster On Demand over-the-top (OTT) service.

With the deal, Motorola Mobility has scored a notable trifecta for its Medios+ encryption technology, having struck deals in the past year with a major satellite company – Blockbuster is owned by EchoStar/Dish – a major IPTV provider – Verizon FiOS – and a major MSO – Time Warner Cable.

Blockbuster On Demand will be using SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ from Motorola’s Medios+ platform to secure ingest and delivery of content on a variety of devices.

Blockbuster On Demand is using SecureMedia for the launch of its service for Android and iOS devices, Samsung TVs and Roku devices. (Time Warner Cable is now also streaming to the Roku box.) Expansion to additional smartphones, tablets, game consoles and e-readers is expected in the future.
