• Clearwire expands into Houston

Clearwire’s Clear WiMAX service is now available in Houston. Regionally, service extends as far north as Conroe and northeast as Kingwood; as far west as Katy and southwest as Richmond/Rosenburg; as far south as Alvin and southeast as Clear Lake; as far east as Baytown. CLEAR will also cover Lake Jackson.
The company also named John Smith as general manager for the Houston market.
Other markets scheduled to launch in 2010 include: New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Denver, Minneapolis, and the San Francisco Bay Area. By the end of 2010, Clearwire’s 4G network is expected to cover up to 120 million people in places such as: Los Angeles, Miami, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Salt Lake City.
• More than 1,100 communities seek Google network

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 1,100 communities have approached Google Inc. in hopes of landing one of the ultra-fast broadband networks that the company plans to build in a handful of spots around the country.
Last month, Google said it will build experimental fiber-optic networks that will deliver Internet connections of 1 gigabit per second to as many as 500,000 Americans. That would be up to 300 times faster than the broadband services reaching most U.S. homes today.
Friday marked the deadline for governments and citizens to express interest. Google said the response has been “tremendous and creative,” with communities using everything from YouTube videos to Facebook groups to public rallies to promote themselves. The company will announce winners by the end of the year.
• Lightower expands in Tri-State area

Lightower Fiber Networks is expanding -fiber network in Westchester County, N.Y. and in Southern Connecticut. The network expansions will add new routes and fiber density in addition to connectivity to data centers, financial exchanges, and business centers throughout the region.
Lightower’s networks also lace through New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The company claims over 4,500 route miles.
Customers in the expansions areas can now use dark fiber, Ethernet, wavelengths, or SONET to connect with data centers and exchanges in the area.
• RCN extends optical network to N.H.

RCN Metro Optical Networks is expanding its network into Concord, N.H. With the addition of the Concord Central Office, RCN Metro now serves 144 Central Offices across its network footprint.
RCN Metro’s Central Office (CO) Access Service provides wholesale, high bandwidth SONET private line connectivity to key Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC) COs for carriers and service providers serving the enterprise market.
