Broadband Briefs for 10/07/08

• Verizon expands high-speed Internet service in Mich.

More consumers and businesses in Bath, DeWitt, Grand Ledge, Laingsburg, Wacousta and Williamston, Mich., now have access to Verizon’s high-speed Internet service.

Eligible residential customers can sign up online for an annual service plan, with connection speeds of up to 768 Kbps, for $19.99 per month. Customers can also choose an annual plan with speeds of up to 3 Mbps for $29.99 per month.

And in Texas, Verizon has launched 77 new channels, including 57 high-definition (HD) channels. FiOS TV customers in the area now have more than 780 HD choices available at any time, with 87 HD channels and more than 700 HD video-on-demand (VOD) titles offered each month.

• JDSU intros 4900 Series pump laser

JDSU has introduced the 4900 Series pump laser product, which it said provides twice the power, improved efficiency and a package that is 70 percent smaller than previous offerings for deployment in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.

JDSU’s pump lasers power optical amplifiers that enable high-definition television (HDTV), Internet, phone and video-on-demand (VOD) FTTH services between a service provider’s central office and consumers’ homes. The pump laser increases an optical amplifier’s signal power so that it can split a signal to travel over multiple fibers and reach the maximum number of homes, helping to decrease signal generation costs for network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) and service providers, according to JDSU.

The 4900 Series doubles laser pump power from 4 watts (W) to 8 W; improves pump laser efficiency by 20 percent, reducing customers’ power and cooling requirements; and is based on JDSU’s telecom-grade L4 diode laser platform that was released in December 2007.

• Ciena enhances Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery portfolio

Ciena Corp. has announced new Carrier Ethernet service delivery switches and other enhancements to its Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery portfolio, which combines the low cost and high capacity of Ethernet with the reliability, management and service quality usually associated with SONET/SDH networks, the company said.

One addition is the CN 3911 Service Delivery Switch, which offers deployment options to support a wide range of mobile backhaul and business services applications, and which accommodates two Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) network ports, eight 10/100/1000 user ports and optional system components.

Another addition is the CN 3920 Service Delivery Switch, which includes a high-capacity switching fabric with all GbE ports – four 100/1000 Mbps optical and eight 10/100/1000 Mbps copper – in a compact, single-rack unit ETSI form factor that provides front access to power and all network and management interfaces.
