• Clearwire says Alvarion, ZTE to aid Spanish launch

KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) – Clearwire Corp. said Tuesday it named telecom equipment providers Alvarion of Israel and ZTE Corp. of China as network infrastructure suppliers to support its launch of 4G WiMAX service in Spain next year. Alvarion will support the launch in Malaga, while ZTE will support the launch in Seville.
Clearwire plans to sell its 4G WiMAX services under the Clear brand. The company says its 4G WiMAX service delivers broadband Internet connectivity similar to Wi-Fi, but with a service area reaching several miles.
And as reported by DSLReports.com, Clearwire has announced its Philadelphia mobile WiMAX network online ahead of an official launch later this month.
• RCN names Horne VP, GM of biz unit

RCN Corp. has appointed Mary Jane Horne as vice president and general manager of RCN Business Services. Horne has 20 years of telecom and cable industry experience.
Horne has been with RCN for the past five years, holding such positions as vice president of corporate development and CTO of RCN Business Services.
Prior to joining RCN, Horne held various positions with Neon Communications, Bell Atlantic, Nynex and New England Telephone.
• CentraComm hires cable veteran Bemis

Cable veteran Daniel Bemis has taken over as president and CEO of CentraComm, a company that specializes in tools used to detect and thwart denial of service attacks. Bemis has served as senior vice president of customer operations at Vonage, and before that as corporate vice president of customer service with Adelphia Communications. He’s also had stints at Media One, and before that Continental Cablevision.
Distributed denial of service (DDoS) perpetrators use malware to infiltrate and manipulate networks of computers into launching large-scale, coordinated attacks intended to saturate a target machine or Web site with external communications requests, ultimately restricting or preventing functionality.
Twitter, Facebook and Google are constant targets, but most other service providers are still not employing adequate identification and remediation methods to address the issue, CentraComm said. This is further complicated by disparate systems now being operated by single regional broadband providers.
CentraComm said it hired Bemis “to enlist MSOs in the fight to protect both enterprise and residential customers from these security attacks, while managing costs.”
• Arris, Vector team up on headends, segmentable nodes

Arris and European vendor Vector today announced that they were expanding their collaboration with the addition of the Arris optical product line to Vector’s portfolio.
Vector has represented Arris as a value-added reseller in the areas of DOCSIS-based high-speed data and cable telephony for years and is now expanding the portfolio of Arris products it sells with the addition of the Arris CHP Max 5000 Converged Headend Platform (CHP).
Arris said the CHP Max5000 enables operators to tap into new revenue streams, such as business services, or deliver more VOD, HD VOD and SDV without deploying any new fiber. Using the CHP suite of products, MSOs can expand their existing fiber capacity by up to 1,600 percent in the downstream and upstream on as little as one fiber.
“We are very pleased to expand our long-standing relationship with Arris and are eager to win new opportunities for this exciting new technology,” said Marcin Starzynski, product development director at Vector. “The Arris CHP Headend Platform is an ideal complement to our current access network products and allows us to build next-generation broadband fiber infrastructure solutions for our growing European customer base.”

Users of Rovi Corp.’s latest Connected Platform media networking software will be able to find, play and share content stored on Windows 7-based PCs.
Rovi’s Connected Platform enables consumer electronics manufacturers to embed networking capabilities in various devices to play entertainment content from Windows Media Center, as well as other DLNA- and UPnP-compliant devices.
Rovi’s Connected Platform SDK with Windows 7 compatibility is available now to CE and consumer premises equipment manufacturers.
