Broadband briefs for 11/30/05

November 29, 2005 By CED Staff

* Dugan takes tech reins at EchoStar

EchoStar Communications Corp. has appointed Michael Dugan to the new post of chief technical officer. There, he will head up all technical development and operations at the DBS company, including its broadcast centers, satellite fleet, and “broadband development.”

Dugan joined EchoStar in 1990 and was the chief architect of the company’s technical foundation. He most recently served as a senior technical advisor to the executive management team. He was president and COO from April 2000 to April 2004. Prior to 2000, he served as president of EchoStar Technologies Corp.

* OpVista is ‘Netcool Ready’

Optical transport player OpVista said its WaveMaster Element System (EMS) has been certified “Netcool Ready” by Micromuse.

With certification, operators that employ Netcool to manage and monitor their networks can also directly control OpVista’s gear via a central location.

The integration “enables service providers to operate a fully integrated network management solution across their multi-vendor networks,” said OpVista VP of Marketing Dawn Hogh, in a release.

*Huang rides Wave7 board

Ciena Corp. co-founder Larry Huang has joined the board of Wave7 Optics, a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology specialist.

“These are exciting times for the FTTP industry and we are thrilled to have Larry join our board, as he brings tremendous telecom industry experience and business acumen to the table, qualities which will help the company capture market share and meet our current customer obligations,” said Wave7 CEO Tom Tighe, in a statement.
