• Horizon Chillicothe brings fiber to village
By Brian Santo
Horizon Chillicothe Telephone will deploy optical fiber cable manufactured by Corning Cable Systems in Darbyville, Ohio, to serve the village’s 300 residents.
In 2007, USDA Rural Development awarded Horizon Chillicothe Telephone with a federal grant to build an advanced fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband network as part of a project including the Darbyville Community Technology Center.
The Darbyville Community Technology Center will house multiple computer terminals and will be a wireless Internet access point for the surrounding park where it is located. There will be dedicated space for educational purposes and equipment to conduct teleconferencing. The USDA Rural Development hosted an open house that took place at the new community center in Darbyville on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Horizon Chillicothe is working through Corning’s Connected Community Program, which assists homebuilders and community developers in implementing fiber optic infrastructure.
• Sonus to cut 50 jobs, 5 percent of work force
By AP
WESTFORD, Mass. (AP) ? Networking hardware and software maker Sonus Networks Inc. said Thursday it expects to cut about 50 jobs, or 5 percent of its work force, to save money and shift its business toward higher-growth areas.
Sonus, which serves wireline and wireless telecommunications providers, said while it’s cutting jobs in part of its business it continues to hire in “some geographies,” such as Bangalore, India.
The growth areas include wireless and cable, said spokeswoman Lucy Millington.
The company expects to take pretax restructuring charges between $850,000 and $950,000 for severance and other costs in the fourth quarter. It expects to save about $5 million to $6 million a year as a result of the cuts.
Shares fell 27 cents, or 15 percent, to close at $1.55.
