• Level 3 expands transatlantic capacity
Level 3 Communications will add transatlantic capacity through a deal with Apollo Submarine Cable System Ltd.
Under the deal, Level 3 will purchase 300 Gigabits of capacity – enough for 10 million simultaneous VoIP calls. Level 3 also has the right to purchase 300 Gigabits more. Going into the deal, Level 3’s transatlantic capacity was 480 Gigabits, and 85 percent was in already in use.
In all, Level 3’s backbone network currently carries over 3.7 petabytes of IP traffic, the company said.
• JDSU targets Agile Optical Networks
JDSU said it will go after the Agile Optical Networks (AON) sector with gusto.
Under a new initiative, JDSU plans to expand its portfolio with a range of AON products, including optical switches, transmission modules and optical amplifiers. It will also implement AON into its set of optical network test and measurement tools.
AON leverages a reconfigurable DWDM network design for multiple broadband services.
• Cablecom dials up in fibre channel storage
Cablecom, the largest cable operator in Switzerland, is using technology from Brocade Communications Systems to expand its Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure.
Under the deal, Cablecom will enlist Brocade’s SilkWorm 4100 switches and routers, which use 4 Gbps Fibre Channel storage networking. The combination will support an additional 30 terabytes of storage for the MSO’s data warehousing needs, including customer billing information.
