Broadcom today announced a joint initiative with auto manufacturer Hyundai to create a new in-car infotainment system that will be built around Broadcom’s Ethernet technology.
The companies say the solution will make advanced safety and entertainment options cheaper and available in more cars.
According to a press release, the system will allow the companies to integrate infotainment, telematics and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features onto a single network. Traditionally, infotainment and safety systems run on separate networks within the car.
Based on Broadcom’s BroadR-Reach Ethernet technology, the single high-bandwidth in-vehicle network will deliver 100 Mbps connectivity to advance integration of safety applications in the vehicle.
Ali Abaye, senior director of product marketing for the infrastructure and networking group at Broadcom, said that the company’s Ethernet solutions will enable a more scalable and open architecture.
“Our collaboration with Hyundai Motor will make features previously only available in luxury models accessible to a broader number of drivers, ultimately improving automotive safety for the masses,” Abaye said.
