The Cable Center announced this morning that it had named three new members to its board of directors, and that it was realigning its mission and focus.
The new board members are Paul Cronin, senior vice president of customer experience at Cox Communications; Phil McKinney, president and CEO of CableLabs; and Comcast’s Kyle McSlarrow, who was recently named regional vice president of the Mountain Region. All three new members will serve three years on the board.
Cronin is a 25-year veteran in the cable and broadband industry. He joined Cox as vice president of customer care in 1999. Prior to Cox, he was in management at Media One and Continental Cablevision.
McKinney took over the helm of CableLabs in June. He is an author, speaker, innovation mentor and columnist, and during his career, he has held technology and innovation leadership positions at leading companies, including Hewlett-Packard, Teligent and CSC.
McSlarrow joined Comcast last year after serving as president of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA). Prior to his cable career, he served as the deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy and held numerous senior positions in the political arena on Capitol Hill.
In addition to appointing its new members, the board approved a realignment of The Center’s mission and focus in light of an evolving cable industry. The Center said it would now concentrate its resources toward recognizing individuals who make significant contributions to the cable industry and to the world at large; serving the industry and the public as the leading educational resource for cable-related information; and generating broader awareness of cable’s story of continuous innovation, entrepreneurship and impact on society.
“Broadband technology and content paved the way for the digital revolution and continues to produce a tremendous number of new ideas, advancements and business opportunities,” said board chair Jerry Kent, chairman and CEO of Suddenlink. “With the full support of the industry and The Cable Center’s board of directors, The Center will focus on the areas where its greatest strengths and unique assets can be most effective in serving the industry.”
The Cable Center, which is based in Denver, is a non-profit organization that is located next to the campus of the University of Denver. The Cable Center is the home of the Cable Hall of Fame, and of the Barco Library, the latter of which is a collection of cable-related information and resources.
Larry Satkowiak, president and CEO of The Cable Center, said that he looks forward to working with the board to further highlight cable’s advances and accomplishments.
“The cable industry is an exhilarating place to work,” Satkowiak said. “It is an industry with a profound impact on the ways we are informed and entertained today, and as it continues to advance new technologies and innovations, it will continue to change our world in unimaginable ways.”
