CableLabs President and CEO Paul Liao wrote a letter of support for a proposed bill that would provide better technical and engineering resources for the commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission.
Liao’s letter was sent to the office of Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), who introduced the FCC Commissioners’ Technical Resource Act earlier this month. If passed, the bill would provide an additional staff person for each of the five FCC commissioners in order to help them better understands issues related to technology.
“I write to you today to indicate my support for your draft bill that would provide greater technical resources to FCC commissioners, specifically and at their discretion, retaining their own electrical engineering or computer scientist on staff,” Liao wrote. “Such technical resources would enable commissioners to better assess technical issues, especially the impact of new and evolving technology on matters of interest to the FCC.”
After outlining CableLabs’ mission and membership, as well as his experience as the former CTO of Panasonic in North America, Liao closed his letter by writing that the process of commissioner deliberations would be well served by having additional technical expertise on each commissioner’s staff.
