Cablemás is performing a comprehensive digital simulcast upgrade of its networks, using products from RGB Networks, in order to reclaim analog bandwidth and repurpose the resource for other products, including HD video.
Cablemás is deploying RGB’s Broadcast Network Processor (BNP) for statistical multiplexing, transrating, grooming and ad splicing; its Simulcast Edge Processor (SEP) for edge decoding; and its Modular Media Converter (MMC) for ASI to gigabit Ethernet conversion.
The upgrade has already been completed in several of the more than 40 cities Cablemás serves throughout Mexico, including Cuernavaca, Tijuana, Juarez, Merida, Cancun and Acapulco.
“With such an extensive upgrade to undertake, we needed to ensure that we selected a solution that would be both cost-effective and reliable,” said Favio Cervantes, director of engineering for Cablemás. “Upon careful review, we selected a suite of field-proven products from RGB Networks that are simple to deploy and maintain and provide the quality that we are committed to delivering to our subscribers.”
Cablemás is the second-largest cable television operator in Mexico based on number of subscribers and homes passed. As of March 30, Cablemás’ cable network served 1 million cable television subscribers, 375,000 high-speed Internet subscribers and 210,000 telephony lines, with more than 2.9 million homes passed.
