Cablevision announced this morning that it hired Andrew Ip as vice president of wireless technology and operations.
In his new job, Ip is responsible for leading the Wireless Technology Group, including the continued development of Cablevision’s wireless technology: including developing, designing, maintaining and optimizing the Optimum WiFi network. He reports to Jerry Genova, executive vice president of network management and field operations for Cablevision.
“Cablevision has built the nation’s largest and most advanced Wi-Fi network, and Andrew’s extensive background in wireless operations, planning, execution and product development will help drive the continued expansion of the Optimum WiFi network, providing even more value for consumers,” Genova said. “For more than a decade, he has worked with companies throughout the mobile broadband industry, and his expertise will help ensure that Cablevision remains the industry leader in Wi-Fi deployment.”
Previously, Ip served as a partner at Meridian Advisory Group (MAG), a boutique consultancy focused on convergence, where he led the wireless practice and financial operations for the firm. In this role, he advised clients on topics such as product development, Wi-Fi planning, partnership diligence and new technology validation.
Prior to joining MAG, Ip worked as a consultant for Mars & Co. and Interactive Broadband Consulting Group, in work that spanned mobile and fixed broadband, media, consumer products, and healthcare technology. He began his career as a radio frequency engineer for Sprint, where he designed and operated the 2G/3G CDMA network in the New York metro area. While at Sprint, he also led efforts around national capital planning and competitive network analysis and worked with device and software startups.
Cablevision has been a Wi-Fi pioneer in the cable operator industry. It first started building its Wi-Fi network in 2008 and expects to have more than 350 million total user sessions this year, after counting 187 million last year and 50 million two years ago. Approximately 250,000 Cablevision customers use Optimum WiFi every day.
