Cablevision Systems promoted David Ellen to executive vice president and general counsel, in charge of Cablevision’s legal affairs. He will report to Cablevision president and CEO James Dolan.
Ellen joined Cablevision in 2004 as senior vice president and general counsel for cable, telecommunications and programming, and in October 2008 he was promoted to executive vice president and general counsel for cable and communications.
Ellen was the lead in-house counsel on arguing for the legality of Cablevision’s proposed remote storage DVR (RS-DVR) service. He also directed the legal affairs of Cablevision’s cable and telecommunications businesses, as well as News 12 Networks, the Rainbow ad sales organization and Newsday Media Group.
From 2001 to 2004, Ellen served as vice president and deputy general counsel of IAC, and before that with Eureka Broadband. This is Ellen’s second stint with Cablevision; he worked for the company from 1997 to 2000 as senior counsel in the company’s government affairs department.
Prior to that, he was a special counsel with the Federal Communications Commission, focusing on the implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
