CEDannounceskeynoter,panelistsfor2005’virtual’tradeshow

November 23, 2005 By CED Staff

Tony Werner, the senior vice president and chief technology officer of Liberty Global Inc., will keynote CED magazine’s second annual Cable Television & Broadband Expo  , a “virtual” tradeshow that will take place entirely on the Web on Dec. 7 and 8.

Registration  is free.

In addition to Werner’s keynote, the show will feature eight panels on important subjects such as IPTV, enhanced television, VOD, IP telephony, bandwidth management, and emerging broadband technologies.

Here is a glance at the full schedule of sessions and speakers for this year’s virtual confab:

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005

10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. ET
Show Keynote – Tony Werner, SVP and CTO, Liberty Global Inc.

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ET
“Dispelling the myths of IPTV” – IP Revolution Pavilion
Thanks to the buzz it is generating, IPTV has become somewhat of a catch-all phrase for what’s “new and different” with video services. This panel of experts will discuss what IPTV is, what it isn’t, and how cable operators might add it to their technology and service repertoires.

Moderator: Gary Arlen, president, Arlen Communications Inc.
Panelists:
– Carla Stratfold, senior vice president, RealNetworks Inc.
– Paul Connolly, vice president and general manager, emerging businesses, Scientific-Atlanta Inc.
– Joe Seidel, director of partner business development, Microsoft TV

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET
“ETV syncs up with cable”  – VOD/iTV Pavilion

Although interactive television weathered a rough go in the early part of the decade in North America, the sector, thanks to competition, is heating up again. While parlor games and other “unbound” applications continue to grow, “bound” enhanced television (ETV) apps will take interactivity to a new level that syncs viewers with the programs they are watching. This panel will explain what ETV is, how it will work in the cable environment, and give examples of how it will be applied in the “real world.”

Moderator: Leslie Ellis, independent analyst and CED contributing editor
Panelists:
– John Callahan, senior vice president, advanced technology group, Time Warner Cable
– Frank Sandoval, director, OCAP specifications, advanced platforms & services, CableLabs Inc.
– Rick Mandler, vice president & general manager, Walt Disney Internet Group & ABC’s Enhanced TV
– Craig Smithpeters, manager, advanced technology and standards, Cox Communications Inc.

2:30 p.m. ET – 3:30 p.m. ET
Sharpening the VoIP edge – Voice Services Pavilion

In a world of “bypass” VoIP services that piggyback via high-speed connections, how can cable operators differentiate their IP telephony service offerings? In addition to the key role of pricing and packaging, this panel will discuss the role of applications and services that can be lopped on top of POTS (plain old telephone service).

Moderator: Gary Arlen, president, Arlen Communications Inc.
Panelists:
– Brian Capellani, CTO & vice president, engineering, Sigma Systems
– Katherine Kirchner, general manager of telephony operations, Bresnan Communications
– Mark Bakies, director, solutions marketing, routing VP/GM, Cisco Systems Inc.
– Stan Brovont, vice president, marketing and broadband business development, ARRIS
– Charlotte Field, senior vice president of national communications engineering and operations, Comcast Corp.

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. ET
“Getting down to business” – The Broadband Enterprise Pavilion
This panel will explore the range of options (wireless, out-of-band, fiber, cellular backhaul, IP PBX, etc.) that are at the ready, and poised to help cable operators tap the lucrative commercial services segment.

Moderator: Karen Brown, senior editor, CED magazine
Panelists:
– Mark Wyman, Road Runner Business Class
– Chris Martin, vice president of marketing, Arcwave
– Kristine Faulkner, vice president, product development and management, Cox Business Services
– Brian Yohn, senior director, commercial marketing, Comcast Online & Voice Services

Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005

11 a.m. – noon ET
“Emerging broadband technologies”  – IP Revolution Pavilion

Industry experts will stack up the capabilities and timelines for “next-generation” broadband platforms such as DOCSIS 3.0, DSL (VDSL2, ADSL2+, etc.), fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP), and WiMAX and other wireless broadband technologies.

Moderator: Leslie Ellis, independent analyst and CED contributing editor
Panelists:
– Sandy Teger, co-founder, System Dynamics Inc.
– Philip Poulidis, senior director, marketing, Intellon Corp.
– John Treece, director, cable business development, Juniper Networks
– Clifford Holliday, president, B&C Consulting Services

12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. ET
“Next-gen VOD” – VOD/iTV Pavilion

What technologies, services and applications will take video-on-demand to the next level? Panelists will discuss what’s on the horizon for VOD architectures and server and streaming technologies.

Moderator: Jeff Baumgartner, editor, CED magazine
Panelists:
– Steve McKay, CEO, Entone Technologies
– Gil Katz, director of cable solutions, Harmonic Inc., Convergent Systems Division
– David Large, president, David Large Consultants Inc.
– Robert Benya, senior vice president, on-demand product management, Time Warner Cable

2 p.m. – 3 p.m. ET
“The Fantastic Four” – Voice Services Pavilion

The triple play is so 2003. These days, it’s all about the quad play, and how cable operators can add mobility to their services arsenal. Dave Gaetani, the director of VoIP business development for Motorola’s Connected Home Solutions division, will join CED Senior Editor Karen Brown to discuss the various mobile options. This panel will discuss the options available to operators today, and whether they include straight wholesale deals with mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) or more specialized agreements with technology partners.

3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. ET
“Bandwidth management” – The Broadband Enterprise Pavilion

What technologies and techniques will enable broadband operators to expand or get better use of their spectrum as it is continually taxed by bandwidth-eating services such as HDTV and VOD?

Moderator: Jeff Baumgartner, editor, CED magazine
Panelists:
– Jeff Fryling, vice president, corporate development, Xtend Networks
– Ed Heuck, vice president, technology, Hargray Communications
– Ian Olgeirson, senior analyst, Kagan Research
– Michael Adams, vice president of video architecture & technology, digital video solutions, Terayon Communication Systems
