Verizon’s new media server made its official debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, along with an IP-based set-top box.

Motorola made both the media server and set-top box, with the former rumored to be in the works for sometime. Motorola’s Rob McLaughlin, senior vice president and general manager of global sales, marketing and ops for the Motorola Home business unit, wrote about the new Motorola Medios+ VMS1100 media server and Motorola Medios+ IPC1100 IP-based set-top in a blog post for Verizon.

“The VMS1100 is the centerpiece of a new Motorola Medios+ VMS platform that supports up to five IPC1100 clients on separate TVs,” McLaughlin wrote.  “The bottom line: everyone in the house can watch what they want, at the same time.

“The VMS1100 has one terabyte of internal storage so you don’t have to compete for space – that’s 100 hours of HD content or weeks of SD programming. The IPC1100 taps into all that goodness via coax, from a sleek box the size of a paperback novel.”

With the new server on its FiOS video offering, Verizon has a more robust whole-home offering to compete against DBS and cable video providers.
