Charter Communications has launched its first national philanthropic project, which was designed to improve 25,000 low-income homes across its footprint by 2020.
The program, which is called “Charter our Community,” will impact 10 percent of the 250,000 low-income families in Charter communities living in homes deemed unsafe and unhealthy by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD.) Charter our Community will step up to the plate to improve those homes by providing a combination of information, resources and volunteer support.
“At Charter, we know the importance of home and believe it is critical to enhance home safety within the communities in which we live and work,” said Charter President and CEO Tom Rutledge. “Through Charter our Community we’ll strengthen and improve communities, using our network and philanthropic partners to educate, empower and support our customers and the public to maintain safe and healthy homes. Through volunteering our time and support, we hope to inspire others to join our mission by learning more and getting involved in their communities.”
Charter is teaming up with Rebuilding Together, which is a nonprofit organization that mobilizes volunteers and communities to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners across the United States. The program was designed to improve homes through a variety of measure including home renovations, homeowner education initiatives and the distribution of needed home health and safety supports.
“Through our partnership with Charter Communications, Rebuilding Together is able to provide even more families across the United States with much needed homeowner education and critical repairs, creating a lasting impact on communities and lives,” said Charley Shimanski, president and CEO of Rebuilding Together. “We are thrilled that Charter shares our belief that everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy home, and are excited to grow the program in new and impactful ways.”
The project will be anchored by a web portal that features inspirational stories, and in the coming months, homeowner resources, education and activities that will help people maintain safe and healthy homes.
