Charter announced Spectrum Internet Assist, a new standalone low-cost broadband service that the operator says exceeds the FCC’s definition of “high-speed” internet. The 30/4 Mbps speed package goes for $14.99 per month (plus taxes and fees) and will be on offer to eligible low-income families and seniors. Starting earlier this week, it was available through Charter’s legacy service area, and reportedly will continue to roll out market by market with a goal of covering the remaining Charter footprint by mid-2017.
“It’s important for cable and broadband providers like us to play a role in bridging the digital divide so that everyone has access to the information and tools they need to succeed in today’s economy,” Charter Chairman and CEO Tom Rutledge, says.
Families with students who participate in the National School Lunch Program and seniors 65 years or older who receive Supplemental Security Income program benefits are eligible for Spectrum Internet Assist. Charter says it launched www.SpectrumInternetAssist.com as well as a toll-free helpline to assist people with the eligibility process and enrollment.
Kudos from several groups came with the launch, including nods for the program from the National Urban League, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and others.
“The National Urban League supports Charter’s launch of Spectrum Internet Assist, a low-cost and high-speed service for low-income families. This program will not only provide broadband access to individuals in need, but it will also allow subscribers to be competitive at work and school via the exceptionally high-speed service they will receive. Spectrum Internet Assist will go a long way to closing the gulf that exists between those with internet access and those without it,” NUL President and CEO Marc H. Morial comments.
Comcast also offers a low-cost internet program and has made several expansion announcements this year, including a recent one in Boston. The operator reports that to date, its Internet Essentials has connected 750,000 families, or about 3 million Americans with a 10 Mbps internet service for $9.95 a month.
