Charter out of gate with online sports viewing

March 3, 2009 By Mike Robuck

Charter Communications said today that it’s the first cable operator to combine select cable sports channels with premium content from sports Web sites.

Charter’s Sports View Plus was designed to provide sports fan with access to content, both online and on their TVs. Sports View Plus gives Charter customers “premium-level access” to baseball, racing, hockey, football through some of the nation’s top Web sites, including FoxSports.com, MLB.com and NASCAR.com, in addition to all of the premier sports channels on Charter’s digital Sports View tier, such as CBS College Sports, ESPNews, Fox College Sports and Fuel TV.

“Online video is growing in popularity, and we want to provide our customers the very best. Our new Sports View Plus package brings our sports fan the best of both worlds – TV sports programming and premium online sports content,” said Rich DiGeronimo, Charter’s vice president of product management. “In addition to the great variety of TV sports available on our Sports View channels, fans will now have premium online access to content such as GameDay Audio and Condensed Games at MLB.com, and continuous driver-pit crew communication during live races at NASCAR.com’s TrackPass PitCommand.”

Charter’s new Sports View Plus package costs $10 per month. Charter, the nation’s fourth-largest cable operator, said Synacor provided support and content aggregation services, as well as the account authentication platform, for Sports View Plus.
