Charter Communications is reported to be shopping its Los Angeles network, which has about 400,000 subscribers.
That represents about 8 percent of Charter’s total of about 5 million subscribers.
Major cable systems have been consistently selling for prices that work out to be about $4,000 per subscriber.
Since Los Angeles is a major market, there is speculation that Charter might be able to charge a premium for the system; various published estimates of the possible sale price range from about $1.5 billion to $2 billion.
Speculation about potential buyers starts with Time Warner Cable, which already has an extensive network that reaches about 1.7 million subscribers in the Los Angeles market; Cox also has operations in and about the city.
