Cars.com and MotorWeek created a three car competition to determine the best muscle car of 2016, and when all the smoke settled, the Chevrolet Camaro 2SS emerged champion of the V-8 Muscle Car Challenge.
The Camaro was followed by the Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack, and Ford Mustang GT, respectively. A group of four judges and one consumer evaluated based on a litany of tests. Each vehicle’s speed and acceleration was rated on 0-60 mph race time and quarter-mile time, while the ability to come to a quick halt was measured in a 60-0 mph braking test.
The 0-60 times, 60-0 braking distance, and quarter mile acceleration is provided in order for each car, as follows: Camaro, 4.3 seconds, 116.2 feet, 12.3 second; Challenger, 4.8 seconds, 121.6 feet, 12.9 seconds; Mustang, 4.7 seconds, 119.1 feet, 13.2 seconds.
The judges also drove each vehicle through the same course, paying attention to handling, acceleration, and comfort. The consumer graded the cars based on how they rode, features, and cargo space.
The Camaro SS “demonstrated remarkable civility, comfort and user-friendliness on the street and eye-popping capability on the racetrack,” Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief of Cars.com, said in a media statement.
Olsen said the testing is important because lowered fuel costs enhance the benefits of owning and driving a muscle car.
“Americans have always loved muscle cars, and with gas below $2 a gallon in many parts of the country, there might not be a better time to be a fan,” he said. “In muscle cars, the cost-for-horsepower is a relatively good deal compared to similarly powered vehicles in other segments. Nearly 500 horsepower for $40,000 is the kind of power for the money you’ll only find in modern muscle cars.”
