RCN is stepping into the 1 Gbps fray in Chicago. It recently announced that 1 Gigabit internet speeds will soon be available to RCN Chicago customers including the communities of Skokie and Lincolnwood.
In August, Comcast revealed it would trial a Gig service in the Chicago area, and in June, AT&T said it was offering Wolf Point West residents in the area a gig in more than 500 units.
RCN reports it will offer internet speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second in all of its serviceable areas in and around Chicago. RCN is boasting no contracts, no data caps, easy installation and affordable pricing for the service.
“The capacity provided by 1 Gigabit is massive, and it more than keeps up with the explosive growth of internet usage,” Chris Fenger, chief operating officer at RCN, says. “Year-over-year internet usage is increasing 35-50 percent and the average home now has 7.8 internet-connected devices, which represents an increase of 64 million devices over the past year alone. This continued trend confirms that DOCSIS 3.1 is a critical technology for the future, enabling not only Gigabit internet speeds, but also future enhancements such as IP video and other advanced services.”
RCN’s Gigabit internet service will reportedly be available with pricing starting at just under $70 for 12 months.
