Chicago wants to be the city with the greatest availability of ultra-high-speed broadband in the United States.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office on Monday announced that the city is launching the Chicago Broadband Challenge.
The city says Millennium Park has already begun offering free wireless Internet to the public, and all parks in Chicago will eventually offer free Internet. The city also wants to expand high-speed access for residents in underserved areas.
Emanuel said he wants Chicago to be one of the world’s most connected cities. He said establishing a world-class broadband network in Chicago will create jobs and improve educational opportunities and other aspects of life in Chicago.
