Ciena has expanded its 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery (CESD) line with several service delivery and aggregation switches designed for enterprise locations, backhaul from wireless cell sites, multi-tenant unit buildings and outside plant cabinets.
Featuring wire-speed Layer 2 switching, high-capacity switching fabrics and all GbE and 10 GbE ports, Ciena’s new CESD products and features include:
- The CN 3960 Service Delivery Switch is equipped with high-capacity 10 GbE user ports, and it supports high-bandwidth business services, wholesale and wireless backhaul applications.
- The CN 3940 Service Delivery Switch is designed to provide dense Gigabit Ethernet service delivery or aggregation, and it combines high port density and advanced switching features in a compact one rack unit size to maximize its Ethernet service delivery efficiency.
- The CN 5140 Service Aggregation Switch features flexible deployment options, and the aggregator can fit into outdoor cabinets and operate over an extended temperature range, offering a compact, ETSI form-factor with front access to all user and network ports, as well as power and system interfaces.
- The CN 5305 Service Aggregation Switch is enhanced with optional MPLS/H-VPLS software for multi-protocol aggregation and switching and simplified IP/MPLS router handoff.
The new CESD platforms are the first of several additions coming to Ciena’s portfolio for further enabling service-driven networks that deliver feature-rich Carrier Ethernet services, as well as programmable, end-to-end optical and virtualized services. The company said the products are already deployed by several network operators.
Separately, Ciena warned that it expects to record a non-cash charge of approximately $456 million for impairment of goodwill in its fiscal second quarter ending April 30. The estimated charge represents the total book value of the company’s goodwill. This non-cash charge does not impact the company’s normal business operations, nor will it result in any current or future cash expense.
