A network operator in Hong Kong is upgrading its Wi-Fi network to the latest generation of the wireless technology, 802.11ac, using Cisco’s service provider Wi-Fi products.
That makes PCCW-HKT the first service provider in the Greater China region to deploy the Cisco’s 802.11ac Wi-Fi network, the vendor said.
PCCW-HKT plans to deploy the Cisco Aironet 3600 Series wireless access point. Using the 802.11ac standard, the Aironet 3600 Series is able to support up to 1.3Gbps of throughput.
The network will also support HotSpot 2.0 (802.11u), an industry-wide initiative to develop a standards-based specification for secure and interoperable authentication and roaming.
Peter Lam, HKT’s Managing director of engineering, said, “The deployment of the next-generation Wi-Fi technology of 802.11ac powered by 1,000 Mbps fiber backhaul will enable our customers with supporting devices to enjoy faster mobile data speed performance.”
HKT provides local telephony, local data and broadband, international telecommunications, mobile, and other telecommunications businesses such as customer premises equipment sale, outsourcing, consulting and contact centers. It is a subsidiary of PCCW, which offers a quad play of fixed-line, broadband Internet access, TV and mobile.
