Clearwire’s expansion of WiMAX continues

July 1, 2010 By Brian Santo

The roster of cities under Clear clouds has expanded to include Eugene, Ore.; Merced and Visalia, Calif.; Yakima and the Tri-Cities, Wash.; and Syracuse and Rochester, N.Y.

Such announcements by Clearwire are frequently accompanied by similar declarations from parent Sprint and investors Comcast and Time Warner Cable that they are reselling the service. In this case, it appears such announcements will be following later.

The extension of Clear into new markets in Oregon, New York and California come on the heels of an expansion last week into St. Louis, Salt Lake City and Richmond, Va.

Clearwire is continuing to offer introductory promotional offers – available to those subscribing online – with plans starting as low as $15 per month for the first two months after a $50 service credit.

With the new markets launched today, Clearwire is now available to another 1.75 million people.

Broken down, its network now covers more than 105 square miles and more than 75,000 people in the area around Eugene and nearby Springfield. In Merced, Clear covers nearly 580 square miles and more than 180,000 people, while in Visalia, it covers more than 550 square miles and more than 288,000 people.

Yakima is an addition of more than 650 square miles and more than 137,000 people, and the Tri-Cities more than 800 square miles and more than 206,000 people. Rochester is another 560 square miles and more than 600,000 people, and Syracuse another 230 square miles and more than 265,000 people.
