WiFi setup, troubleshooting, and parental controls − oh my! While broadband subscribers tend to be more technologically savvy than in the past about how to better control their in-home WiFi access, that doesn’t mean they aren’t crying out for improved simplicity. And as they attach more devices to the network, they want more pristine access all over the home.
During a Q1 earnings call last month, Comcast executives referenced the impending rollout of the company’s new xFi cloud-powered home WiFi service that will support millions of gateways that are already out there in the wild, and on Monday the kickoff was officially revealed. Also, the operator reports it will launch no-configuration, adaptive xFi pods that can be paired with either the xFi Wireless Gateway or the xFi Advanced Gateway, which will help customers extend their WiFi coverage to “even the most remote areas of their homes.”
The latter is coming via an investment in Plume, which develops distributed WiFi software and systems. Comcast reports it is working with the company to combine the technologies of Plume and xFi into a unified experience that improves throughput and consistency to individual devices and provides easier, more seamless whole-home WiFi coverage.
On the simplicity front, Comcast says it wants to provide more WiFi straightforwardness through Xfi’s new one-stop digital dashboard. Customers can set up their home WiFi network via a mobile app, website, and on the TV with the X1 voice remote to set up a network, find the password, see what devices are connected, troubleshoot issues, set parental controls, and pause WiFi access when they want to (such as during dinner or homework time).
The xFi service is now available to the 10 million Xfinity Internet customers with a compatible Xfinity WiFi device (the xFi Wireless Gateway or the xFi Advanced Gateway) and comes at no extra cost, according to Comcast. Comcast says it expects the number of xFi-ready homes to increase to about 15 million by the end of 2017.
As part of the xFi launch, Comcast is renaming its most popular wireless gateway device that is reportedly in 10 million homes today, which will now be called the “xFi Wireless Gateway.” The company is also introducing a new “xFi Advanced Gateway” to customers on the fastest speed tiers. The xFi Advanced Gateway will be the primary device the operator uses to provide 1 gigabit speeds to customers. It can deliver gigabit speeds over WiFi and supports Xfinity Voice, home security, and automation applications.
