Comcast bumps up VOD choices by 450%

May 11, 2010 By Mike Robuck

Comcast announced today that it has increased its VOD offering by a whopping 450 percent with the addition of 9,000 movie titles.

With the latest additions, Comcast is serving up more than 11,000 VOD movie choices, including 3,000 in HD. The total number of Comcast’s on-demand choices now stands at 25,000.

XfinityThe new movie content will start launching in Comcast’s Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., markets under Comcast’s Xfinity brand. Comcast said the additional choices will be rolled out to other Comcast digital customers across the country, but the op didn’t provide a timeframe.

Comcast said the additional choices were made possible by a new content storage and distribution system via Comcast’s extensive fiber network, which also enables the company to offer “significantly more content in the near future, including TV series, kids content, music and other special programming.”

Comcast’s newest on-demand additions include newly released films such as “Nine,” “Leap Year,” “The Blind Side,” “Crazy Heart” and “The Hangover,” as well as classics such as “The Blues Brothers,” “The Godfather” and “The Exorcist.”

“It’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done in on-demand. We’re revolutionizing our service with a system that is capable of delivering infinite choice,” said Derek Harrar, senior vice president and general manager of video and entertainment services for Comcast. “This is another important step in bringing consumers the multi-platform experience they want.”

Comcast also provided an update on its online service today. Currently, Fancast Xfinity has almost 1,500 movies available based on customers’ subscription levels. They can also buy or rent 5,500 moves from the Fancast Web portal store.
