Comcast this week debuted a new internet service in Boston that uses DOCSIS 3.1 to deliver speeds up to 1 Gbps to residential customers.
Comcast says the new service will offer a significant boost over old speeds as well as increased access via a network of more than 17 million hotspots.
The company notes the service is also on its way to a number of other major East Coast cities in the coming weeks, including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Charlottesville, Va., Baltimore, and Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pa. Additional areas throughout these regions will be implemented on a rolling basis throughout the latter-half of 2017, the company says.
“With the launch of our 1 Gigabit residential service, adding to the best in-home WiFi experience and our recent launch of XFINITY xFi, we continue to deliver an unparalleled internet experience for our customers in terms of speed, control, and reliability,” Tracy Pitcher, SVP of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region, comments. “We know consumers need an internet provider that can deliver speed, and we have been on a pace of doubling our network capacity every 18 to 24 months, ensuring that we stay well ahead of demand.”
Comcast has previously outlined plans to cover its entire network footprint with DOCSIS 3.1 by 2018, and last year announced plans to launch the service in Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Detroit, and Miami. The operator recently expanded its gigabit offering to customers in the Colorado, the Oregon/SW Washington region, suburban Kansas City, Mo., and Olathe, Kan., service areas.
Everyday prices for the 1 Gbps service will cost approximately $105 per month without a term contract, while a 12-month commitment is being prompted for around $80 per month.
Separately, Comcast Business announced the completion of its $1.7 million fiber network expansion in New Haven, Conn., this week. The build impacts the downtown areas along Church, Orange, Audubon, Elm, State, and Temple streets as well as on Tower Lane. The operator says it’s now delivering up to 10 Gbps Ethernet speeds to more than seven businesses located between Tower Lane and State Street.
“Speed of communication is a top priority for business and Comcast is hitting it head on,” Tony Rescigno, president of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, reports. “Their efforts are helping to solve key concerns of business which will, in turn, help build our State’s economy.”
