Comcast-owned movie ticketing platform Fandango has been integrated into the cable giant’s X1 set-top box, enabling Xfinity TV customers to locate show times and movie tickets on their TV screen.
Comcast is launching the feature with Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which hits theaters June 22.
Starting Wednesday, customers watching a trailer for the movie will be prompted to say “get tickets” into their X1 voice remote to pull up a search of local movie times using the Fandango network and start the online ticket-buying process. However, to complete the purchase, users must still use Fandango’s mobile app or website.
“Fandango is the perfect partner to help us give customers a fun, easy way to go right from watching TV at home to enjoying the newest releases in the movie theater,” said Nancy Spears, VP of strategy and execution at Comcast Cable, in a statement. “Xfinity X1 enables us to continually explore one-of-a-kind experiences that complement the TV viewing experience, allowing viewers to interact with content where and when it is convenient for them.”
The companies said they plan to expand the feature to additional new releases throughout the year.
“At Fandango, we are always looking for innovative ways to super serve movie fans, when they are engaging with movie content so that they can easily act on their interest and purchase a ticket to the theater on the platforms and devices they use,” said Mark Young, SVP, head of business development and strategy at Fandango.
Comcast acquired Fandango, which is part of NBCUniversal’s Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, in 2007.
As part of the promotion of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Comcast has created a curated section on X1’s On Demand menu where customers can rent or buy any of the franchise’s earlier films, pre-order the forthcoming release, and access clips, trailers and other special content related to the Jurassic films.
