Content providers are betting long on virtual reality: more and more are rolling out VR offerings, and investing in VR companies. To that end, Comcast just led a Series A funding of a company called Baobab Studios, a virtual reality animation company.
Comcast Ventures was joined by HTC, Samsung Ventures, PayPal founder Peter Thiel, and more. The investment round closed at $6 million.
Baobab Studios has the potential to become the “Pixar of VR” according to a Deadline interview with HTC Vive CCO Phil Chen. A preview of Baobab’s first movie, Invasion! Is on Samsung Gear VR’s Milk VR service.
The move comes just a couple weeks after Comcast invested in a virtual reality broadcast company called NextVR.
