Comcast announced today that it’s offering Internet safety programming on its video-on-demand (VOD) tier, and the MSO has launched new consumer resources on its Internet security Web page.
With June being National Internet Safety Month, Comcast is taking a multi-pronged approach to educating its subscribers on how to make the Internet a safer environment.
“At Comcast, we take our responsibility of delivering a safe, secure and superior online experience for our customers very seriously,” said Jay Opperman, senior director of security and privacy. “We do this by taking a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to Internet safety that focuses on identity and privacy protection, family and parental controls, and safeguards for digital assets. Our goal is to ensure our customers are provided the means and education to protect themselves and their families.”
All throughout the month, Comcast’s VOD customers can access a PBS Frontline documentary, called “Growing Up Online,” for free. The film examines the effect that the Internet and the “digital world” have on the social and emotional lives of teenagers.
Also in June, with the support of the Internet Keep Safe Coalition, Comcast is offering additional resources on its security Web site that include:
- A “for parents” page, which features content-rich tips for parents on Internet Safety.
- A “for kids” page that includes games designed to get kids interested in staying safe online.
- A new “frequently asked questions section,” written by Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children’s Hospital Boston and assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
- A downloadable brochure for parents, called “How to Talk to Your Kids About Internet Safety.”
- An Internet safety contract for parents and their children designed to help families establish an open dialogue about Internet safety and set ground rules for the use of the Internet, both inside and outside of the home.
