Within the year, Comcast is promising a gigabit internet service to residents and businesses in Huntsville, Ala., which already has had service providers either deploy a 1 Gbps offering or announce plans to do so. Other operators vying for Gig attention in the Huntsville market include AT&T, WOW! Internet, Cable, and Phone, and Google Fiber.
Comcast plans to use its existing wiring to deliver the service, but subscribers will need a new DOCSIS 3.1 compatible cable modem that’s capable of delivering gigabit speeds.
For business customers, the new Comcast 1 Gbps service will be on offer in addition to gigabit and multi-gigabit options Comcast already available in Huntsville, including Comcast Business Ethernet. Those services can support speeds of 100 gigabits per second over fiber.
“We know that high-speed internet is the infrastructure of the future, and it is absolutely necessary for communities to remain competitive for economic development and attractive to people looking to move to Huntsville,” Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle comments. “We appreciate Comcast’s efforts to bring gigabit-speed Internet service to Huntsville, and look forward to the benefit that this technology will deliver to our residents and businesses.”
Comcast is currently offering the DOCSIS 3.1 residential and business services in Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, and Detroit.
