Comcast tops 100 movies for same-day release as DVDs

December 18, 2009 By Mike Robuck

Comcast said it will serve up its 100th day-and-date DVD movie of the year, with “(500) Days of Summer” available in its VOD tier starting on Tuesday.

“(500) Days of Summer” joins seven other HD movies available this month the same day they’re released on DVDs.

Comcast said movies available the same day as DVD releases continued to rise in popularity and were consistently among the top-performing content for its VOD service.

Last month, Comcast’s on-demand portal had its highest-performing movie week ever, with seven of the top-10 performing films viewed for the month available the same day as DVD release. The increase was largely due to a deal for more day-and-date movies.

Over the past year, Comcast was able to offer more movies the same day as DVD release to its customers than ever before through partnerships with major studios including Warner Bros/New Line, Fox, Universal, Summit, Sony and MGM.

“More than 100 times this year, there was no faster way to watch a new release movie at home than with Comcast On Demand,” said Derek Harrar, senior vice president and general manager of video and entertainment services for Comcast. “We pioneered day-and-date, so we’re thrilled that our studio partners were able to nearly triple our day-and-date movie offering in favor of our customers.”

A frequency you can count on There are few constants in life, but what few there are might include death, taxes, and a U.S. grid frequency that doesn’t vary by more than ±0.5 Hz. However, the certainty of the grid frequency is coming into question, thanks to the rising percentage of renewable energy sources that…
