Comcast’s Webmail service was hacked last night.
Comcast subscribers trying to access their e-mail through Comcast.net were directed instead to generic “this site under construction” pages.
Comcast believes that systems under its control were not the ones hacked. It said it believes its registration information at the vendor that registers the Comcast.net domain address was altered, which redirected the site.
Some traffic was redirected to “under construction” pages hosted by domain name registering company Network Solutions.
Comcast largely regained control of its e-mail system within hours but said that “some customers are currently not able to access Comcast.net or Webmail” and that Comcast engineers are still working to resolve the issue. The company believes the same hack is the root cause of continued service interruptions, as well.
“We have alerted law enforcement authorities and are working in conjunction with them,” the company said in a statement.
It remains unclear if any of Comcast’s subscribers’ data has been compromised.
