CommScope broadband courses satisfy SCTE recertification

September 21, 2011 By Brian Santo

Broadband courses from CommScope’s Infrastructure Academy now satisfy requirements for SCTE recertification units.

SCTE members taking broadband courses through the CommScope Infrastructure Academy can now earn SCTE recertification units toward SCTE credential recertification, the company said.

These Infrastructure Academy broadband courses have also been approved by Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) for their continuing education credits.

“CommScope takes great pride in its Infrastructure Academy, which offers 10 broadband courses that are designed to assist installers with successfully deploying state-of-the-art subscriber networks,” said Mark Alrutz, director of worldwide technical sales and service at CommScope. “The recognition of our Infrastructure Academy by the SCTE is truly an honor, as well as an indication of the outstanding training we offer the industry.”

The Infrastructure Academy courses covers a wide range of products and installation techniques for coaxial and fiber cables in trunk, distribution and drop environments. The 10 courses now meeting the SCTE standards for recertification units are:

  • SP1010 – CommScope Drop Solutions
  • SP1020 – CommScope OSP Fiber Solutions
  • SP1030 – CommScope FTTX Solutions
  • SP1040 – CommScope Trunk and Distribution Solutions
  • SP1050 – CommScope ConQuest Solutions
  • SP1100 – Broadband Drop Solution Fundamentals
  • SP4400U – CommScope Fiber Solutions
  • SP4410 – CommScope OSP Fiber Design & Engineer
  • SPCCCS – CommScope Coax Introduction
  • SPUMDU – Residential/MDU Design and Engineer

According to Pam Nobles, director of education and certification at the SCTE, CommScope’s courses are applicable to maintaining SCTE certification – one technical training day equaling one recertification unit.

“The CommScope courses offered via its Infrastructure Academy are focusing on topics and issues that installers are dealing with on a daily basis,” Nobles said. “Through the Infrastructure Academy and other programs, CommScope has been in the forefront of showing how vendors and SCTE can work together to provide expertise, instructors and courses that can benefit the entire industry.”

Individuals taking CommScope courses must document their training and the associated recertification units. One day of technical training equals one recertification unit; however, if an installer takes an online course, the time involved must be tracked or documented. Someone certified in one of the SCTE specialist programs needs 12 units over a three-year period to recertify, and engineering professional level needs 21 units over a three-year period.
