Comporium Communications is deploying gear from BigBand Networks Inc. to usher in a variety of IP-based services, including video.
Under the arrangement, the Rock Hill, S.C.-based ILEC is tapping a smorgasbord of BigBand equipment, including its BMR1200 multimedia router, BRE20 encoder (offered in partnership with EGT Inc.), Cuda12000 cable modem termination system, and FastFlow provisioning manager. BigBand acquired the CMTS and FastFlow products earlier this year from ADC, and has been integrating product lines ever since.
Comporium is using the equipment to provide IP video, digital cable and high-speed data systems to about 125,000 subs in its southeast systems. Comporium is piping live video via Gigabit Ethernet to network edge locations. From there, content is delivered to homes as IP video over fiber. In other areas, the ILEC’s hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks are delivering digital video via MPEG-2.
